This slanted design allows the teeth to mesh gradually rather than all at once, resulting in much smoother, quieter, and more efficient power transmission compared to traditional straight-cut spur gears. 

Unlike standard spur gears where the entire tooth slams into contact at once, helical gear teeth are cut in a spiral pattern. As the gears rotate, the contact starts at one end of the tooth and smoothly progresses to the other end. For a pair of helical gears to mesh correctly, both must have the exact same pitch, pressure angle, and helix angle—but the direction of their helix must be opposite (one right-handed, one left-handed).
